On working in silence

Why every part of the studio — and this website — is built to be understood by eye alone.
People often ask whether being deaf changes how I make work. The honest answer is that it changes everything except the work itself. The small marks laid over old banknotes come from looking, and looking has never needed sound.
What it does change is the room around the work. I build studios, and now a website, that can be moved through in silence. Nothing important is ever announced only by a noise. A confirmation is a tick you can see. A price is a number on the page. An order is text you can read back before you send it.
That is also why the shop hands off to a written message rather than a phone call. A conversation I can hold in my own time, in writing, is a conversation I can hold well. I would rather build for that than pretend the gap is not there.
